Personas and segmentation

Ideal customer profile

Also known as ICP

An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the type of company that gets the most value from your product and is most valuable to you in return, defined by attributes like size, industry, situation and the problem it needs solved.

What is the difference between an ICP and a persona?

An ICP describes the account: which companies to go after. A persona describes the people inside those companies: what they are trying to do, what gets in their way, and how they decide. Business-to-business teams usually need both, with personas sitting inside the ICP.

What goes into an ideal customer profile?

Firmographics such as company size, industry and region are the starting point, but the useful part is the situation: the problem the company has right now, the trigger that makes it look for help, what it uses today, and why your product wins for it.

The best ICPs are written from your best existing customers, not from the market you hope to sell to.

How do you find your ideal customer profile?

Look at the customers who signed fastest, stayed longest and expanded most, then work out what they have in common. Sales calls, onboarding conversations and support tickets usually show the shared situation more clearly than CRM fields do.

How often should an ICP be updated?
Review it whenever your product, pricing or best customers change, and at least every few months for an early-stage company, where the ICP tends to sharpen quickly.
